Congratulations to Mr Willie Moloney 2nd dan and Mr Toney Lucey 1st dan on running and finishing the Dublin City Marathon. They have in the process raised over 4000euro for the Hospital for sick Children in Crumlin. Their fellow club members are extremely proud of this fantastic achievement and some are planning to joining them for next years event.
A six person IUTF Ladies team travelled to Germany for a team sparring event with the WKA. Each bout was over two rounds and the close fought team battle ended in a draw. Afterwards the Irish members were treated to some wonderful German hospitality and everyone enjoyed the experience tremendously. The competitors were as follows: Lucy Wolf (BUTF), Maeve Frawley ( Tralee and Chareville), Norma Carroll (C.I.T), Cathy Dunne (Tralee), Debra Donovan (Tralee and University of Limerick), Orla O' Shea (Cahirciveen). The coach was Ms. Patricia Dalton. The IUTF would like to express their thanks to WKA Germany for the special treatment of the Irish contingent. The trip was funded by the IUTF.
Red/Black Belt Seminar with Mr. Toni Martella
Mr Toni Martella of the National Association of Germany (NAG/ITF) Germany conducted a seminar for the IUTF on Sunday November 30th. The main topic was the correct use of sine wave in ITF patterns. Mr Martella concentrated on patterns up to Gwang Gae. It was truly an eye opener for many to see patterns performed with such flawless technique by Mr Martella, he also gave a superb demonstration of 5th degree pattern moon-moo. After three hours of intensive work on the fundamentals the seminar finished with some advanced jumping kicks. Afterwards Mr. Martella was kind enough to pose with some of the members for photos. The IUTF instructors will certainly be looking foreward to Mr. Martella’s return in the summer when he conducts a two day course for instructors only.
An I.U.T.F contingent of 31 competitors travelled to Swindon, England to take part in the PUMA British championships. The group was under the expert tutelage of IUTF Vice Chairperson, Mr. John Riordan. An Impressive haul of 19 medals were won 7 Gold, 2 Silver and 10 Bronze. Special thanks to P.U.M.A UK headed by Mr Raymond Gayle 6th Dan and Mr Mark Ogbourne 6th Dan for their kind invitation and hospitality, many of our competitors commented on the friendly atmosphere at the event.. It was great to see so many junior grades travelling, in fact the majority of the squad were yellow and green belts. The I.U.T.F prides itself on a policy of encouraging students to gain International experience at an early stage in their training.
Although the tournament was held in Swindon the group stayed for two days in Manchester before making their way down. Mr Khalid Iqbal, 5th Dan A.M.A had very kindly agreed to host a seminar on the Saturday morning. The seminar covered techniques used by security personnel and focused mainly on restraining an individual who may be out of control, without causing injury. The group enjoyed acting out different scenarios and learned also how to work as a team in restraining someone. The IUTF will be bringing Mr. Iqbal to Ireland in early 2004 for a series of courses on this theme.

It was a case of “cead mile failte” (“one hundred thousand welcomes”) as over 200 foreign competitors descended on Cork, Ireland’s second largest city, for this years Open Irish Championships. With a total of almost 600 entrants the Championships proved to be Ireland’s largest ever Taekwon Do tournament. The Saturday was reserved for Black Belt sparring and patterns as well as the Celtic Cup team events. Juniors and colour belts took centre stage on the Sunday. Both days ran extremely smoothly and punctually thanks to the tireless work of the organiser, Patricia Dalton, and to the invaluable efforts of the Irish and foreign judges and referees. All of the Saturday sparring sections were quite large, with up to 26 competitors in some weight categories. The host association (the Irish united Taekwon Do Federation) proved particularly strong in the individual sparring divisions while many of the placings in the black belt patterns were won by foreign competitors. In the Celtic Cup team sparring, Ireland (IUTF) won the ladies and both the junior boys and girls sections while Italy won the men’s section. The BUTF and PUMA equally won the greatest amount of placings from the foreign contingent with Belgium in third.
IUTF Chairperson Don Dalton, 6th Dan, promised that next year’s event will be even bigger. According to him, “Each year we try to improve on the last. We evaluate our mistakes and strive to eradicate them the following year. Overall however we were especially happy with this year’s success. In 2004 we will have more sections, and there will be even a greater amount of foreign competitors. We will also try to hold some social events and tours. I think the Open Irish Championships and the Celtic Cup have now become a must attend competition for all serious competitors in Europe. We are already looking forward to meeting our many friends again in November 2004.”
