The Nice Tiger

By David Swan

Mark Phillpott (2nd Dan) is one of new breed of quality young fighters to arrive on the scene in Ireland over the last few years. Phillpott who hails from Cork in the south of the country is part of one of Ireland´s largest Martial Arts associations, the Irish United Taekwon Do Taekwon Do Federation (IUTF). He has been a constant member of the national team (which is nicknamed `the Celtic Tigers`) since his promotion to black belt in 1998 under the instruction of Patricia Dalton (3rd Dan) and Don Dalton (5th Dan). According to Patricia Dalton who instructed him to black belt, "Mark´s rise to the top has been nothing short of amazing. He was one of only five people ever to reach the level of black belt in two years in the history of the association. This is phomenal when you consider the the average time is four

years. Mark would train twice a day in gruelling sessions concentrating on both sparring and traditional. He is constantly placed in both divisions at tournaments nationally and internationally, and he normally wins gold. It is widely accepted that he is the hardest training Taekwon Do practitioner ever to come out of the country."

Phillpott`s CV. is impressive indeed. Within a few weeks of his black belt test he travelled to England to compete in the Open World Taekwon Do Championships hosted by the TAGB where he was placed third in sparring (flyweight). The next year he won a silver medal in the Open European TKD Championships in Holland and in 2000 he won two bronze medals in the Open World Championships in Eindhoven. Since 1996 Phillpott also won numerous national and regional championships and was Irish competitor of the year in 1999. This year he qualified first to represent Ireland in the -60 kg class in continuous sparring in the WKA World Championships to be held in Vienna.

Perhaps one of his greatest achievements was winning the TAGB British Championships at lightweight in 2000. He became the first Irish black belt to win this event which is one of the hardest tournaments in the world. According to Phillpott, 'I was truly wrecked after the competition. I had to win five fights and there were also some tough fighters there from Holland and Poland. Mr. Dalton is always emphasising the importance of roadwork and thankfully I had put in the miles. I must also stress that the national squad sessions under Mr. Dalton have been critical in the success of all the team members over the last few years."

Phillpott now runs his own Taekwon Do school in a small town called Kanturk but he continues to train every week in the Millstreet club and in the national squad sessions. Last month he also had the chance to travel to Turkey and Germany on the IUTF instructor course there. According to IUTF Chairperson and Coach Don Dalton `Mark Phillpott is the hardest training person that I have ever come across in my 19 years involved in the Martial Arts. I have had numerous students over the years who have had more talent than Mr. Phillpott but they will never achieve what he has done. These people will always find excuses. I am personally inspired by Mark Phillpott because of his work etiquette and lack of ego. With all he has done he is unpretentious, humble and is the most genuine and respectful individual and friend that I have ever met. You often find big heads littered around the dojangs throughout the world and they could take a leaf out of this gentleman´s book. He is an inspiration for all in the IUTF." It is because of this attitude that Phillpott was nicknamed the gentle tiger during a recent international trip. He is a fine example of yin and yang, i.e. an aggressive and hard fighter displaying complete control, respect and humility.
