IUTF Technical championships
The first ever IUTF Technical Championships took place in Kanturk on January 18th. This event was completely free to all participants. The primary focus of this event was patterns, team patterns and special techniques. Students had the opportunity to compete in both individual and team patterns. The individual pattern sections were contested using the international ITF knockout system. This ensured consistency in the performance of the contending students as well as preparing them for European and World Championships. Overall the standard was very high. One of the highlights was the jumping kick section with all high grade colour belts performing all five ITF special techniques. Daniel O' Sullivan of Killarney and Roisin Dalton of Galway were outstanding. Jordan Dalton of Tralee/Coachford won gold in all three categories. There was rapturous applause throughout from the parents who created a friendly atmosphere. This event will now be held annually due to its great success.

Sunday February 22nd was the date for TKDI Blackrock Tournament in Cork. This tournament was a great opportunity for a warm up for the Intervarsities and the Munster Championships. Around 30 IUTF competitors attended in what turned out to be a very friendly event which finished at 5.00pm. It was an excellent day for Ballyvourney's diarmuid O' McSweeney who won gold and silver. Ms. Norma O' Carroll (Dublin/Millstreet) put up a great performance in the ladies black belt sparring which she won convincingly. The following students all won two gold medals: Daniel O´Sullivan (Killarney), Eoin Fitzgerald (Killarney), Lilly Mannion (Athlone), Roisin Dalton (Galway), Barry Hurley (UCC/Ballyvourney), Julian Dalton (Coachford/Tralee), Jordan Dalton (Coachford/Tralee). There were many more individual gold medal winners and some fantastic performances. It is not a coincidence that all of the competitors that won two gold medals are attending squad training every week. All of our competitors performed with typical IUTF vigour and respect. We would like to thank the parents for making such huge sacrifices every weekend in order to get their students to the squad training and the competitions. There are many members coming from as far away as Galway and Athlone every week to travel to Squad Sessions and the results are there to be seen. It is a huge sacrifice for the parents and families of these members but as a result we now have the potential to create the next winning world champions from this amazing crop of students. We are now moving into a new and exciting period for the IUTF and Ireland.
ITF Ireland is now the only INO in Ireland
The ITF Has just announced that INO 47 (ITF Ireland) is now the only INO in the country. The ITF Adminstration web site has just issued the full list of the INOs worldwide and our group retains its membership. Last year ITF Ireland registered 78 black belts and now has 29 lifetime members with many more to come this year. There are more and more organisations joining all the time. Our quality of events is unrivalled. In 2008 we ran the following: ITF International Instructor's Course with president Choi; ITF Referee Course with Master Galarraga; The International Irish Championships; 8 work shops with Master Maidana around the country; 4 Masterclasses with Master Galarraga around the country.
According to Master Nicholls (ITF Secretary General);
"The rules relevant to criteria of INO and ISD are clear and although uncomfortable
as it may be, it is now time to fully enforce these criteria. This need is to protect
our members that adhere and to help those that have not met the minimum criteria
to understand and realise their position and aid them where necessary. It is the
intention that an ISD within a country where an INO exists be encouraged to join
with the INO. An INO has the responsibility to act responsibly on behalf of the ITF
and, if at any time, their responsibility can be proven to be misdirected, then their
licence to act on behalf of the ITF can be rescinded. There are a number of countries
that have more than one INO. These countries have been written to separately to this

Within a country where an existing INO is already in place with a significantly larger
number than 50 Black Belts, it would not be sensible to facilitate competition by
the authorising of a further INO which would currently only meet minimum criteria,
and the ITF would encourage groups to both unite and pave their way together for
the betterment of Taekwon-

Here are a few thing our new member instructors have said last year:
According to Mr. Terry Donnelly (6th Dan) “as a new member of ITF Ireland I can already see how egalitarian and mature the organisation is. Everyone is working together for the betterment of our students and the INO has the basic principle of serving the students and instructors first. We are all very excited about this new phenomenon in Ireland. 2008 should prove to be a special year for us all."

On Monday 23rd of February UCC Club hosted Master Don Dalton, ITF Ireland President for a Sparring Seminar.
The Seminar started with some relaxed and simple warm ups that concentrated on building kicking techniques and some yoga stretching which was quickly followed by the padding up of all members. Things quickly then quickly changed to a learning conducive, intense atmosphere. Master Dalton concentrated on one to one hand sparring techniques in the first section of the training. Using many Guinea Pigs, Master Dalton demonstrated the best means of defense against such attacks, and after a period of practicing parrying and blocking, it was time for backs to be put against the wall and to let loose on each other. It was all a very enjoyable experience and very educational, to say the least.
Next up Master Dalton demonstrated how to trick opponents using the turning kick
and how to gain a definitive score using said technique. We then worked on "Bridging
the Gap" which is a very important aspect of sparring that is often overlooked. Master
Dalton's modesty came to light during these exercises as he credited Taekwon-
Throughout the training, Master Dalton spoke of the "Do" which is a critical part
of "Moral Culture." He also spoke about how we get everything quickly in modern society.
He compared this to fast computer games, the wealth of people in University and many
other aspects of modern life. He said that this kind of society often prevents students
from reaching their full potential in the Martial Arts, as many people want things
instantly, and are unwilling to work at things to get them. As such we now live in
a "fast food world." However mastering good technique only comes with time and practice,
which more and more of modern men/women are unwilling to give. This which reminded
me of the saying-
At the end of the seminar our Head Instructor Mr. Mark Philpott(4th Dan) thanked Master Dalton for sharing his knowledge with all of us, praised Master Dalton's ability and personality, and credited him with the ability of all of us, as Master Dalton is the Instructor of our Clubs instructors. To conclude, Master Dalton praised Barry Hurley who is a green belt. He began his training in UCC and has since risen to the top of the colour belt scene in Ireland in just one year of training) for his attitude and ability and showed him to be a good example to the rest of the Club. Barry actually trains twice every week in UCC, one in Ballyvourney, every Sunday (three hours at squad training), once at boxing and also works out in the gym. He has all the characteristics of a future champion.
I would personally like to thank Master Dalton for teaching this seminar, and I would also like to thank him for everything he has thought us and what he has done for us, there is no question in my mind that we would not be who we are today as a club and as an association without the influence and example of this great man. Master Dalton is a true Master in every sense of the word.
Thank you Master Dalton,

This year’s Munster Championships was held in Tralee, County Kerry. The event was
attended by IUTF competitors from around the country with an excellent showing from
the Galway region. The competition was run on six matted areas and was finished at
4.15pm. There was some fantastic sparring in the men’s black belt sparring with Mr.
Leon Brydone coming through in the -

This years Golden Four Awards went to:
Adam Quinn, Dublin.
Jordan Dalton, Coachford/Tralee.
Naomi O’ Brien, Tralee.
The Golden Four is a special award given to all IUTF members that achieve a gold medal in all four IUTF Majors (Munsters, Leinsters, Connaughts and the International Irish Championships). This is one of the most difficult tasks in the IUTF calendar. No member won last year and no senior black belt has ever won a Golden Four award! Next year there will be a new special new award for any IUTF member that wins 8 gold medals in all four majors. This will be called the Supersonic Eight. The winner will receive a full range of new Supersonic gear.
Brydone and O’Sullivan are Competitors of the Year Winners.
Mr. Leon Brydone of Athlone TKD and Ms. Claire O’ Sullivan of Caherciveen were presented with the IUTF Annual Competitor of the Year award in Tralee in March. Tim Tierney of Listowel TKD won the Junior Competitor of the Year Award. All three black belts played starring roles in the ITF European Championships in Italy. Mr. Brydone is one of the most dedicated IUTF black belts
in the country. He travels from Athlone each week to attend squad training (a round trip of six hours). It is the second win for Ms. Claire O’ Sullivan who is a student of Mr. Riordan, VI. Next year there will be an additional new award for age 12 and under which is also open to colour belts.

Master Nestor Galarraga, Chairman of the ITF Tournament Committee conducted a special Masterclass in Spain in March which was attended by close to 100 students. The morning session was dedicated to children while the second workshop was for adults (predominantly black belts). The event was attended by Master Dalton and Mr. McCarthy of IUTF England. Master Maidana was also in attendance. Master Maidana and Master Dalton assisted throughout and both each instructed a period of the seminar. According to Master Dalton “it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to train under Master Galarraga and I look forward working under his tutelage in the years ahead.” The event was hosted by Mr. Christian Oriolani of Spain.

Master Dalton took a five man team to Zaragoza, Spain for this year’s ITF Aragon
Championships which were expertly hosted by Mr. Christian Oriolani. Mr. Fernando
Perez was organiser of the competition on the day. There were over 30 competitors
from Italy as well as England, Wales, Belgium and Argentina. The IUTF team consisted
of Mr. Fitzgibbon (Galway/Tralee), Mr. Keane (Kanturk/Charleville), Mr. O’Connor
(Galway/Listowel), Mr. Brydone (Athlone) and Mr. O’Sullivan (Tralee). Each of the
black belt section had around 10-

There was a special team sparring competition held in March in Zaragoza between Ireland and Spain. The event was hosted by ITF Spain. The Irish team CONSISTED of Mr. Fitzgibbon (Galway/Tralee), Mr. Keane (Kanturk/Charleville), Mr. O’Connor (Galway/Listowel), Mr. Brydone (Athlone) and Mr. O’Sullivan (Tralee). The win eventually went to the visiting Irish IUTF team by a score of three wins, one draw and one loss. The IUTF would like to thank ITF Spain and Mr. Christian Oriolani for their fantastic hospitality. The trip was IUTF funded.
Mr. McCarthy is Promoted to Master
Mr. Patrick McCarthy has been promoted to Master by the ITF. Mr. McCarthy tested in Spain under Master Nestor Galarraga, Chairman of the ITF Tournament Committee. Mr. McCarthy had to perform a series of patterns, sparring, self defence, breaking and theory during the test. He was accompanied by his student Mr. Calvin Thomas who travelled to assist for Ho Sin Sul. The self defence section was particularly impressive as Mr. Thomas was sent flying through the air on numerous occasions. Mr. McCarthy also broke three boards with forefist punch and jumping back kick (first time). According to master Dalton “I have always felt that Master McCarthy was always a Master. He has always had the characteristics of a real Master. He continuously trains, has integrity and is always humble. I believe that he is the true example of a Master. He is an inspiration for me and I will never forget what he has given me. Thank you Master McCarthy.”

Sunday 26 April 2009 was the day I completed my grading for first degree black belt after just over 3 years of training in Taekwondo. The grading this year was held in Athlone, so luckily not too early a start for me to get there in time for the squad session at 10am. The advantage of the two hour squad session before the grading is that you certainly get warmed up and loosened out and it’s a chance to get rid of initial nerves. The disadvantage is that it can tire you out a bit before the actual grading and like many others on the day I went into the grading with sore feet. But the Taekwondo student will recognise that this is itself part of the test of your character – the indomitable spirit expected of black belts. After working hard for 3 years to get this far, sore feet weren’t going to stop me from trying to give my best performance on the day of my black belt grading.
There was a short break while the hall was set up for the grading -
Then it was time.... the call “Fix up the lines please” and the immediate reply from
25 voices of “Yes Sir” signalled the official start of the Black Belt grading. There
were 3 black belts and 22 black stripes lined up and, having seniority by virtue
of age, I was first of the black stripes right in the middle of the front row. We
bowed, said the tenets of Taekwondo, a few words from Master Dalton and then we were
dismissed to the back of the hall. The first group (of 12 students) was called –
after a few names it was clear this was going to be the group of more senior students
and then my name was called “Mr Doyle” – “Yes Sir” – adrenaline –run onto the floor,
take position, bow -
The first section was the patterns from Chon-
We were then tested on various other Taekwondo skills. Demonstrating certain counter
attacks to sidekicks. Some non-
The second group of younger students was called to the floor and went through a similar
ordeal for the next 2 hours. We had a chance to relax a bit but we weren’t finished
yet. Towards the end we were called back to the floor to act as referees for the
younger students while they sparred -
For the final stage all 25 students lined up again for the breaking and theory tests. The senior students were called one by one to the breaking horse – the device which firmly holds two one inch thick boards. I was first asked to break these with a forefist punch. Breaking is all about focus and confidence. I had never broken 2 boards before but I couldn’t let any doubt or concern about hurting my hand enter my mind. I took a deep beath, focussed, a loud kihap and broke the 2 boards – that was a nice moment. Next I had to break the 2 boards with a side kick – I failed on the first attempt. Master Dalton explained that I wasn’t using my weight behind the kick – I needed to start further from the board and slide in to get the full force to break. I tried and probably came closer on my second attempt but still failed to break – something else to improve on next time.
The students were called up to the table for questions on the theory of Taekwondo. My examiner for this section was Mrs Dalton. I was nervous but well prepared. At my age I cannot compete with the younger students in terms of flexibility and athleticism, my body has it’s limits. But my mind is still sharp, and with 3 Taekwondo black belts in the family I’ve no excuse for not doing well in the theory. My biggest fear was that I would call Mrs Dalton “Sir” instead of “Miss”. She had some challenging questions but I was able to answer well enough. The final question was to explain the elements of the Theory of Power which was a question my instructor had asked me earlier that morning so it was fresh in my mind. Then it was all over – the grading was finished.

The IUTF would like to welcome the Grenagh Taekwon-

The Connacht Championships, this year, was the most successful to date. With instructors and students attending from most IUTF schools, all combined to make it a successful day. Valued ITF Ireland members Mr Faulkner (Meath/Dublin) and Mr. Murphy (Waterford) both brought strong contingents to really add to the occasion This was the first Connacht Championships to feature fully matted rings which raised the profile of the event higher than ever. Next year it is planned to feature the international level electronic scoring system, making the IUTF the only association to feature this in regional tournaments.

May saw the return of the Friendship Tournament to Kanturk. The event was supported by many local instructors as well as some students from Galway and Athlone. The competition covered sparring, tul, team tul, traditional kicking, special technique, and splits competition. The event was carried out in the usual friendly manner with the various competitors winning many medals and making numerous new friends. This was also the first year that the Friendship Tournament was fully matted. A special thanks goes to all the judges that worked throughout the day.

ITF European Championships The 2009 ITF European Championships were held in the beautiful beach resort of Umag, Croatia from May 26 to May 30. The event was organised by Mr. Tomislav Đaković and was attended by 21 countries. The European Tournament Committee headed by Mr. Fernando Perez and including Master Don Dalton and Mr. Mark Skyrme helped to run the rings and decide upon any issues that arose.
The senior sections were especially successful for the IUTF with Athlone´s Mr. Leon
Brydone and Millstreet´s Ms. Norma Carroll both taking home gold medals. Tralee´s/Galway´s
Mr. Fitzgibbon won silver in sparring and bronze in 5th Dan Tul. All three had to
overcome serious obstacles on the road to the finals. In the men´s -
The Euro Cup was also held on the Thursday and was open for colour belts only. This event was not an official ITF competition and the organiser decided to place only four or five competitors in most of the sections in order to give a real feel good factor. Thus while there were no European titles on offer the IUTF colour belts nonetheless took the event seriously and competed with their usual indomitable spirit. The next European Championships will be hosted by INO 47 and will be held In Cork, Ireland in 2011. This will be the first Europeans to fully feature the new ITF Computer Scoring System which has revolutionised ITF tournaments. The system was successfully used at the last World Championships in Birmingham

Four ITF Ireland members travelled to London in June for the special International Instructor's Course for 4th Dan and above. Master Dalton, Mr. Riordan, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Dunne all arrived on the Friday for the three day course which had over 80 participants from 17 countries. There were 17 Masters in attendance. ITF Ireland would like to congratulate Master Harry who was promoted to 8th Degree black belt. Every pattern was covered from Kwange Gae to Tong Il. The next IIC for 4th Dan and above will be held in Argentina next year which is the country's 200 anniversary.

On the 26th June eleven Irish competitors flew out to Simmern Germany for the WKA German Championships. On arrival to the B&B my family I went up to our room and settled into our room. The following day the rest of the team arrived. After settling in some went swimming in the local pool and explored the area. Later on we went to the Shogun Gym where the team were weighed in. That night I was feeling excited about competing the next day.
Saturday morning everyone was up bright and early for breakfast, were anticipating a great day. We walked to the venue where the competition was held, when I entered the enormous stadium I began to feel very nervous, but after my Dad took me outside for a walk I calmed down a bit, and realised each competitor must be feeling a little the same. When I came back inside Mrs. Dalton spoke to the team about trying to keep calm and relaxed during the day, supporting each other, and that winning isn’t everything. This helped me a lot to relax.
Throughout the day I walked from ring to ring supporting the other competitors and waiting for my division to start. I had a long wait before competing although I was unsuccessful in getting a trophy there were five trophies’ brought back to Ireland. The last of the Irish competitors to compete was Mr Mike O’Brien. After a long day everyone got behind to support him and the atmosphere was fantastic. Even though he was unsuccessful, we all went home on a high with the memories of a great weekend.
A very big thank you to Mrs Dalton for organising a fantastic weekend.

During the seminar, Master Dalton focused on Sparring techniques and the foot movements involved in sparring. Master Dalton demonstrated excellent technique as well as breathtaking speed and power in all his movements, and was a great inspiration to all, Juniors and Seniors alike. Throughout the seminar Master Dalton commented on the return of the Charleville Legends to the fold and was glad to be reunited with his old friends, all of whom he had trained and trained with, in the past. Master Dalton also reminisced about International tournaments that he had attended with Mr, Barrett in the 1990's in Countries such as the Gambia. All in all the atmosphere of the seminar was relaxed and friendly, but still very intense and physically tiring.
After the seminar Master Dalton again praised the Club members and explained some

Three senior IUTF instructors recently travelled to Spain to test under Master Galarraga, Chairman of the ITF Tournament Committee. Upon finishing the training session the three candidates prepared for degree promotion. The test lasted for two and a half hours and consisted of Patterns, Breaking, Sparring, Self Defence and Theory. Ms Lisa Connolly of Galway was testing for IV Dan, Mr. Mark Philpott of Cork to V Dan and Mr. Alek Milanov of Cork to VI Dan. According to Master Galarraga the technical level shown by the three was very good and their successful results were announced during the official banquet of the evening. Congratulations to Ms. Connolly VI, Mr. Philpott V, and Mr. Milanov VI.

The first weekend of October was a special occasion for ITF Spain who had the opportunity to host Master Nestor Galarraga (VIII) for Spain’s first International Instructor Course. The event was held in the city of Barcelona and was organised by Mr. Fernando Perez, VI, President of ITF Spain and Chairman of the ITF European Tournament Committee. There were attendees from eight countries (Ireland, England, Italy, Bulgaria, Argentina, Scotland, Wales and Spain).
Master Nestor Galarraga is the Chairman of the ITF Tournament Committee. He was assisted throughout the course by Master Jose Maidana of Argentina and Master Don Dalton of Ireland. The course was also attended by Master Isaac Harry (VIII) (Chairman of the ITF Disciplinary Committee), and Master David Brown (VII) of Scotland. The event was of historical proportions since it was the first IIC to be instructed by Master Galarraga. The Friday session started with one minute silence in honour of Mr. Todor Todorov and his wife Ms. Svetla Todorova of Bulgaria, who recently passed away in tragic circumstances.
The enthusiasm of the participants was plain to see throughout the course. The first
day consisted of the practice of basic Tul. Master Galarraga placed great emphasis
on body movement and also explained in great detail the technical aspects that are
necessary in the performance of Tul. The participants demonstrated energy and fervour
throughout, thanks mainly to the inspirational teaching of Master Galarraga. The
last activity of the day began at 10pm. During the banquet there was a demonstration
of two full contact fights of the ITC (International Taekwon-
The second day of Seminar (Saturday 3rd) consisted of eight hours of intense training. This was the first ITF International Instructor Course which not only included fundamental techniques but also detailed training in free sparring and realistic self defence. The participants had the opportunity to learn from one of the most qualified teachers in the world. Master Galarraga had worked closely with General Choi Hong Hi for numerous years and also with President Choi Jung Hwa. His knowledge was vast and encyclopaedic throughout the weekend to the amazement of all present. During this session Master Dalton instructed the 4th and 5th Degrees on advanced tul and also instructed the session on free sparring.
At end the second day, there was a formal meeting of the ITF Tournament Committee, under the supervision of its Director, Master Galarraga. The meeting included members of the European Committee, Master Dalton (Ireland), Mr. Mark Skyrme (England) and Mr. Fernando Perez (Spain). Master Jose Maidana was also present representing the American Committee and Master Michael Muleta (Australia), representing the Committee for Oceania was also present by video conference. Especially invited, was the General Secretary of the ITF, Master Trevor Nicholls. The Committee discussed many important issues including rule changes and the upcoming World Championships in Korea. After six hours of intense work, the tournament committee meeting was terminated and the changes accepted by all members. It was a historic moment that will have a significant impact on future ITF tournaments.
The last day of Seminar (Sunday 4th), began with a review of the previous two days.
Master Galarraga elaborated on the ingredients that are needed in order to create
more power in the fundamental movements of Taekwon-

During the training Mr. Perez introduced a series of exercises which were specifically orientated to improving reaction time. These exercises were never seen previously by the Irish contingent. The instructors present were over the moon with their new found knowledge and will be using the new routines in their next classes!!! The Galway session was preceded by a Squad Session instructed by Master Dalton. It was refreshing to see many of the previous day’s attendees travel the long journey for the second session. Mr. Perez spent considerable time teaching counter attacks for the blitz and the lead leg side kick. He was enthusiastic throughout and his infectious positive teaching method had the participants longing for more. He finished the second work shop with some games which had all the students and instructors beaming from cheek to cheek. It was a special weekend with a close friend of the IUTF. We look forward to future workshops with Mr. Perez in the years ahead.

Congratulations to all the competitors who displayed impeccable sportsmanship and etiquette.
The choong Moo Cup was held in Killarney in December. The friendly competition was organised by Mr. Jason Moriarty 5th Dan. The day began with a squad session conducted by Master Dalton. Within 10 minutes of the completion of the training the rings were set up and the action started. The majority of competitors were from the Kerry area but there were also IUTF entrants from Cork and Galway. The competition included sparring, tul, special techniques and a splits competition
which is popular with the young entrants. The event was finished by 4.00pm. There was a special trophy presented to the competitor with most points. This was presented to young Julian Dalton with four golds. Mr. Moriarty would like to thank all the instructors that helped so much on the day.

ITF Expansion Committee Chairman Master Don Dalton recently travelled to Ethiopia
in order to conduct a three day training workshop for the Ethiopian Taekwon-
It was an early rise the next day for the ten hour training session. Upon entering the large Dojang the Irish group was struck by the massive group of Ethiopian black belts attending the event (close to 200). There were also a smaller number of red belts and black stripes in attendance. Master Dalton Duly proceeded to cover ITF Tul from Chon Ji to Choong Moo. This was also included as part of the National Umpire and Referee Course which would be completed the following day. He was assisted by his compatriots throughout. As he progressed he gave the lower grade students the opportunity to train in smaller groups with Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Dalton and Mr. Keane. At one point the Ethiopian National Television Station came to report on the event and duly interviewed Mr. Kiros and Master Dalton.
The next day was eagerly anticipated by all as Master Dalton moved to the sparring arena. A present was first made to Mr. Kiros by Supersonic Sports Ireland of 10 full sets of sparring equipment which were to be used in the upcoming tournament on Sunday. Master Dalton duly proceeded to delve into effective sparring techniques needed to succeed in ITF tournaments. He discussed the various systems/styles on show in different countries and examined different ways of succeeding against them. Master Dalton also acknowledged the help that Ireland received from Master Maidana (Argentina) over the years. According to him “Master Maidana opened a new world for us and this invariably helped our country to succeed in ITF events over the last decade. “ The standard on show by the Ethiopian black belts was indeed stunning and they easily adapted the new techniques and ideas being presented to them. At 1pm the emphasis again changed as the group moved to a different Dojang within the campus in order to complete the Referee/Umpire Course. The entire training was videoed for later study.
The next day was scheduled to be a free one but Master Dalton asked Mr. Kiros to
organise another session for instructors in order to cover Black Belt tul. After
a number of phone calls, over 40 instructors turned up for the impromptu session
which aptly demonstrated their desire for more and more training. At the end Mr.
Kiros presented Master Dalton, Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Dalton and Mr. Keane with some beautiful
traditional Ethiopian clothes. He also presented Master Dalton’s and Mrs. Dalton’s
two children with traditional dress. Mr. Kiros said that he felt like he had made
a new family and felt that he and Master Dalton were now brothers. The Irish instructors
sincerely thanked Mr. Kiros and all of the Ethiopian Taekwon-
Mr. Keane is Promoted to 4th Degree
Mr. Sean Keane recently tested to 4th Dan during a trip to Ethiopia. Mr. Keane was testing along with over 30 Ethiopian ITF practitioners. The panel was headed by Master Dalton and he was assisted by Mr. Kiros, Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Dalton. The overall level was very high. Mr. Keane had to endure the effects of testing at high altitude and demonstrated his typical indomitable spirit by excelling throughout. After the test the large contingent again entered the main campus for the tournament. The first part of the competition was dedicated to ITF demonstrations. Various clubs and regions delighted the massive crowd in attendance as they vied for gold medal success. Next came some patterns and sparring sections which culminated in a special bout between Mr. Keane and one of the top Ethiopian competitors. With darkness falling rapidly the experienced Irishman won a competitive bout thus adding to his already impressive CV. Mr. Keane has been WKA World Kickboxing champion, ITF European champion and ITF World Team Sparring champion in the last few years. Mr. Keane is a student of Mr. Tom O’ Sullivan and now trains under Master Dalton. He is one of the best loved IUTF members due to his positive attitude and high integrity. Young Jordan Dalton also won two gold medals in the tournament.
